Low on the Baldy/Iron ridge: 7220 Thus there's at least 2844 gain to Baldy and at least 787 gain on return to Iron Note: Delorme Topoquads shows GPS track has 13,545 feet of gain. Can this be correct? That probably isn't accurate since for just Iron it also shows over 7000 ft of gain to the summit with 1000 ft of gain on the return. That seems too high. Thus I may need to add things up manually ... low 7706 7903 - 7706 = 197 x 2 Iron 8007 Baldy 10064 Parking Lot 2000 Baldy Village is 4200+ Gain from Iron to Baldy (2 bumps on ridge): Direct=10064-8007=2057 1st bump: 7227 to 7704 = 477 then 7320 to 7850 = 530 next low 7711 10036-7711=2325 low pt between baldy and west baldy: 9830 west baldy to baldy: 10036-9830=206 Thus total gain to Baldy is 477 + 530 + 2325 + 206 = 3538 ft Gain from Baldy to Iron: 9950-9830=120 7850-7711=139 7704-7320=384 7941-7227=714 Total Gain: 120 + 139 + 384 + 714 = 1357 Total Gain for the day: 7200 + 3538 + 1357 = 12095 Distance From HPS description: Distance: 14 miles round trip on trail and cross-country Gain: 7200' total, 6600' out plus 600' on return Time: 10-12 hours round trip Rating: Class 1, very strenuous Navigation: Moderate Between Iron & Baldy is about 4 miles For Comparison: Baldy (ski hut): 3900' 8 mi RT Gorgonio: 5420' 15.5 mi RT Jacinto: 2400' 10 mi RT All 3: 11,720' 33.5 mi RT
